During the Durathon Service Process, the vehicle is subject to data downloads, engine health check-up and substrate cleaning. Pressure air pulse and heat are used in the substrate cleaning process to remove any diesel soot and ash to reopen the small air passages.
If a filter is heavily plugged with soot, it may need to be thermally regenerated, for which a Level 2 Thermal Regenerator cleaning (or baking oven) will be used. For extremely plugged filters, the Level 3 Core Rescue method will be used. This method consists of baking and labor-intensive individual cell cleaning to recover the filter.
The Durathon Service Process consists of the following steps:
1. Data Downloads
- Before removing the filter, the FleetCrew technician will perform a DPF system data download and looks for temperature, back pressure and faults.
- In addition an engine ECU download is performed to check for any engine faults.
- The filter is now removed by the FleetCrew technician.
- A visual inspection is performed for signs of damage.
- Cell depth is manually inspected to measure any potential plugging or damage.
- At this point, with the filter removed the technician will perform an engine health check-up which includes:
- Opacity Test
- CAC Hose Inspection
- Oil and Fuel Test
- Filter is weighed to capture initial weight in grams.
- DPF pressure level in inches of H2O is tested and recorded to determine whether the DPF will require pulse cleaning only, Level 2 regeneration, or Level 3 Core Rescue.
- Level 1 Pulse Cleaning uses high-volume, low-pressure pulses of air to dislodge unburned soot/ash from unit.
- When a DPF substrate requires baking due to heavy plugging, it will first go through the Level 1 Pulse Cleaning process.
- After the unit has been pulse cleaned, the Level 2 Thermal Regeneration process will follow. This method consists of air-pulse heating (or baking) to burn off the soot trapped in the unit.
- For extremely plugged filters, the Level 3 Core Rescue method will be used in addition to pulse cleaning and baking. The Core Rescue method consists of labor-intensive individual cell cleaning to recover the filter.
- Final weigh-in is captured in grams, and DPF pressure level in inches of H2O is checked once again to ensure the level is down to zero.
- To ensure the filter is renewed to OEM specifications, the DPF is finally put through a high pulse Air Blower (dust collector system), which blows out any minimal amount of left over residue, leaving the filter clean and ready to use again.
- Lastly, FleetCrew conducts an overall system inspection and operation verification.
